The Discovery Space Shuttle was launched on the fifth Department of Defense shuttle mission.
Known as mission STS-33, it was the 32nd shuttle mission and the last to fly in the 1980s. After orbiting the Earth for seven cycles, Discovery deployed a top-secret US military satellite. It’s believed that the satellite was a spy satellite designed to listen in on military and civilian communications from communist nations.
