Pope Paul VI canonized Elizabeth Anne Seton as the first American saint.
Elizabeth was born before the foundation of the United States of America in 1774 in the province of New York and spent her life devoted to good deeds in the service of God. One of the main reasons she was beatified was that when a nun prayed to her in 1952 to cure a child of leukemia, the child was miraculously healed.
