The city of Baghdad, Iraq, surrendered to the Mongols after a battle that saw thousands killed.
The battle took place between January 29 and February 10, but the Mongols did not move into Baghdad until this day.
The fall of Baghdad signaled the end of the Abbasid Caliphate. It was also the high point of Mongol conquest in the Middle East.
