Briggs & Longstreet was awarded a patent for the first steamboat in the US.

On February 1, 1788, the very first patent for a steamboat from the United States was issued to Isaac Briggs & William Longstreet. It is the only patent issued by the state because this was before the adoption of the Federal Constitution.

The First Steamboats John Fitch was the first to build a steamboat in the United States. His initial 45-foot craft successfully navigated the Delaware River on August 22, 1787.
